Parody Songs

Cat doesn’t just live in the dark. She knows how to laugh in it, too. Alongside her sultry pop rock, she brings a sharp comedic edge to her work through clever, high concept parodies inspired by Chappell Roan. From “Phone Stealing Club,” a chaotic reimagining of Pink Pony Club set in West Hollywood’s nightlife, to her playful twist on The Subway - "The Subway Parody", about an obsessive lesbian crush on a girl working at Subway, Cat blends satire with storytelling. Turning real life experiences into bold comedy.

All About Cat

Artistic Influences

Cat draws inspiration from the cinematic melancholy of Lana Del Rey and Amy Winehouse. Critics often describe her as the "gothic Lana Del Rey." Blended with inspiration from the eerie, experimental edge of The Mars Volta. Her sound is further shaped by a fascination with the intensity and symbolism of religion, weaving themes of temptation, power, and human duality into her music. The result is a sultry, haunting style that feels both deeply personal and sonically expansive.

Early Life & Upbringing

Born in New York and raised on the island of Maui, Cat always felt pulled toward something bigger. She’s had a deep passion for music from an early age, beginning to write songs at just five years old and joining her church choir at seven. From that point on, she immersed herself in vocal training and songwriting, discovering a natural instinct for melody and lyricism. For Cat, creating music isn’t just a passion, it’s something instinctive, almost inevitable, as if the songs demand to be brought to life.

On Religion & Rebellion

Raised in the Christian church, Cat's relationship with religion deeply informs her music. Realizing she was gay at just ten years old, she began questioning the beliefs she was raised with. Especially as much of who she was felt framed as the antithesis of those teachings. Leading her to question those beliefs and the idea that human nature and identity should be suppressed.

She often embodies the “devil” as a metaphor for rebellion, temptation, and self-acceptance rather than evil. Her work explores the gap between what is preached and what is practiced, calling out hypocrisy while embracing the reality of human desire.

As an out and proud lesbian woman, at its core, her music is about reclaiming power. Creating a space for those who have felt judged or excluded, especially within the LGBTQ+ community, to feel seen, liberated, and unapologetically themselves.

Creative Process

Cat's music often begins in a place of hurt. Using songwriting as a way to process emotion and transform pain into something powerful. From that raw starting point, she leans into themes many shy away from, exploring controversial subjects like infidelity, sexual desire, and intrusive “bad girl” impulses with unfiltered honesty.

Often described as a provocateur, Cat fully immerses herself in these emotions, using both her lyrics and visuals to express her sexuality as a form of empowerment. She’s drawn to records that feel dangerous and controversial. Songs that take risks, challenge expectations, and spark conversation. For her, the most compelling music is the kind that makes people think, question, and debate long after it’s heard.

Live Performances

Cat Van Rae’s live performances are immersive, theatrical experiences that tell the story of her transformation into the “Devil Girl." A seductive force haunting a fictional world, luring its townspeople into their deepest desires and darkest impulses. Through sultry, alluring monologues woven between songs, she guides the audience through a narrative that blurs the line between concert and stage production. The result is a captivating fusion of live music and theater, designed to pull audiences into her world and hold them there from beginning to end.
